Timber Appraisal

A timber appraisal is an estimate of the total market value of timber in a forest stand at a given point in time. This estimate can be made by a forester before any trees are marked and cut using statistical sampling methods.

The number of  inventory plots needed for an appraisal will depend on the level of precision desired by the landowner and the variability of trees in the forest.

A new forest owner can use an appraisal to establish the basis of his or her woodland. Knowing the basis, or beginning value, is important for reducing tax liability if trees are later sold.

Historical timber appraisals can also be performed after a timber harvest has occurred. Foresters 'measure the stumps' to determine growth and use this and other data to pinpoint the timber value from years past.
